The adult Yellow-legged Clearwing is on the wing between late June and July. It is very local and scarce in Warwickshire with a westerly distribution in the county. It can be found in a variety of habitats including woodland, parkland and quarries where mature specimens of the larval foodplants occur.

Larval Foodplants

The larval foodplant is Oak (Quercus spp.), Birches (Betula spp.) and sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa.). The larva feed on the inner bark of tree stumps.

Distribution

The distribution of the Yellow-legged Clearwing in our region has improved in recent years, almost certainly due to the increased use of pheromone lures used to attract and record clearwing moths. While the species may be most numerous in areas of mature woodland that supports the larval foodplants, its is likely that the species may also occur in urban and suburban areas, especially where housing developments have retained mature Oak trees that host relic colonies.
